Project Title: Maker Minds
Category: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
Amount Requested: $2,000

Project Description:
I, along with the middle school Science teacher at Sangre de Cristo Middle-High School in Mosca, Colorado, are seeking a grant of $2,000 to establish a dynamic maker space. This space will serve as a catalyst for creativity, collaboration, and hands-on learning for students aged 11 to 14. The proposed maker space will be integrated into our daily ICAP enrichment period, providing students with dedicated time to explore, experiment, and engage in projects that ignite their curiosity. By working with tools and technology such as 3D printers, coding kits, and robotics, students will gain practical experience that is essential for future career paths. Establishing this maker space will ensure that our students are not only consumers of technology but also creators, ready to meet the challenges of the future. We aim to inspire a new generation of STEM leaders who will contribute to our world.

Project Justification:
The proposed maker space, named Maker Minds, aims to inspire and empower 75+ middle school students at our small rural school. Our school serves a diverse population, with approximately 54% of our students coming from low-income families. Many of our students face socioeconomic challenges that limit their exposure to STEM opportunities outside of school. Despite these challenges, our students are eager to learn and possess a strong desire to engage with creative problem-solving via technology and hands-on activities.
Students will develop critical skills in areas such as coding, engineering, and design thinking, preparing them for future academic and career opportunities in STEM fields. The hands-on nature of the maker space will increase student engagement and motivation, fostering a love for learning and exploration.
Ultimately, this project aims to bridge the gap between our students and the broader world of technology and innovation, preparing them to become the future leaders in STEM fields. Your support for the Maker Minds will help us transform the educational landscape for these students, opening doors to new possibilities and empowering them to realize their full potential.
