Project Description:
The science of reading emphasizes the importance of explicit phonics instruction as the most effective method for teaching children how to read. Decodable books are a key tool in this approach because they allow children to apply the phonics rules they've learned to sound out words. This method helps children develop strong decoding skills, rather than relying on less effective strategies like guessing. By focusing on phonics and decodable texts, children can build a solid foundation in reading, leading to better literacy outcomes.

Proposal:
This grant will be used to purchase High Noon Books' Magic Belt Series, which offers engaging, age-appropriate decodable texts for older beginning readers. These books combine phonics instruction with interesting and relevant stories to help build strong decoding skills. The series follows a boy who meets a wizard and embarks on adventures to save his sick grandpa. Along with the decodable books, I am requesting workbooks and Talisman Cards that focus on phonics and decoding. These resources will support literacy development by providing engaging content that respects the reader's maturity and interests.
