Project Title: SE CO Rural Science Access

Category: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)

Funding Amount Requested: $2,000

Project Description:
We need an upgraded set of microscopes as ours were last serviced in 1992. I plan to use these microscopes across all grade levels I teach, inspiring students with hands-on, inquiry-based learning. Additionally, upgrading our chemical library and equipment will enhance our hands-on activities, particularly in biology and anatomy classes. Currently, we rely heavily on photographs for many activities, but having physical anatomical models would improve engagement and understanding. I've tried addressing the equipment gap with STEM-oriented outings, but these are infrequent and expensive in terms of travel time and cost. The goal is to encourage students to emotionally and intellectually invest in science, helping close the achievement gap in STEM that exists between rural and urban schools.

Impact:
Our school's demographics consist of approximately 60% Hispanic, 35% White, 4% Black, and 1% Asian students. Around 40% are enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program. Though we graduate about 25 students per year, we are one of the highest-achieving schools in the area in terms of graduation rate, test scores, and post-secondary career placement. Providing my students with more hands-on STEM education through upgraded materials will greatly benefit their learning experience, sparking interest and improving retention. Unfortunately, my classroom lacks some essential equipment, which has limited our ability to do hands-on activities. Project-based learning is key to generating student interest and curriculum retention.

Use of Funds:
- **Replacement set of 10 microscopes:** $1,000
- **Set of 5 scales (for measuring mass up to 500 grams):** $300
- **Anatomical models (including skull, muscular system, blood vessels, and dissection specimens):** $700
