Project Description:
Chelsea Robson, a special education teacher at Bridges High School in Carbondale, CO, is seeking funds to support an adaptive climbing and swimming program for students with significant needs. Bridges High School is an alternative high school that also houses a life skills and post-secondary transition program. By providing students with access to adaptive sports, this project aims to improve motor skills, safety, and leisure skills that will benefit students both during their school years and well into adulthood.
Project Proposal:
The "Adaptive Climbing and Swimming" project will offer students specialized instruction in two adaptive sports: climbing and swimming. These activities will not only support physical therapy, problem-solving, and safety skills, but also provide a meaningful way for students to engage in recreational activities. Adaptive sports give students the opportunity to develop leisure skills that they can continue to participate in after they leave the school system. This project will have a lasting impact on their physical and mental health while fostering personal confidence and a sense of belonging in a group activity.
Budget Narrative:
Adaptive Climbing Lessons: $57/hour, alternating weekly with swimming.
Adaptive Swim Lessons: $10/student for 30-minute lessons, alternating weekly with climbing.
The funds requested will cover lessons for one semester, allowing students to alternate between these two sports throughout the school year.
