Blue Traditional Sami Bracelet. Made with reindeer leather, pewter thread and button. 6 5/8 inches.
The Sami Bracelet has its orgins in the 10,000 year old indiginous Sami culture of Sweden, Finland, Kola peninsula of Russia and Norway. The Sami (formerly Laplanders) are reindeer herders and although they have given up their Nomadic lifestyle, they still manage the reindeer herds primarily for harvesting their meat, horns and hides. At this time there are approximately 80,000 Sami people on Earth. They also use the reindeer leather, bones, and antlers for handmade knives, pouches and jewelry. The bracelet is traditionally made of reindeer leather decorated with spun silver/pewter braid and fastened with a reindeer-antler button.
Made and donated by Kim Young RDH, a GDR volunteer who has gone to Nepal and Mexico.
