1998 Wine of the Year
Two special Magnum bottles - 1998 Ornellaia (in OWC) and 2015 Ghost Cellars Cabernet
Ornellaia as one of the first "Super Tuscan" has become one of Italy's most interesting, exciting and collectable wines. Their philosophy of "quality without compromise" is evident with the "Wine of the Year" award in 1998 and perfect score of 100 from Wine Spectator and Decanter. A Salmanazar (9L bottle) of Ornellaia 2005 was sold for USD $33,600 at Christie's of New York.
The 2017 Ghost Cellars is our Cabernet from the Central Coast. 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cab Franc, 2% Malbec, 1% Merlot.
1998 Ornellaia
Decanter - Score 100
The wine of the flight, this 1998 is a wonderful wine, and it's hard to believe this is 25 years old. It has aromatic notes of mint, blackcurrants, wood spice and cedar. Ripe fruit emerges on the mid-palate with fine, silky tannins and crisp acidity. There's dense flavour concentration in the mouth, offering tobacco, clove, black plums, wood smoke and a long, lingering finish. Tasted 8/2023 (MCK)
2015 Ghost Cellars Tasting Notes
FV - Score 98
The 2015 is visually beautiful, ruby/purple-colored with a dark red core. A ripe nose and subtleties including the slightest hint of vanilla. Rich dark fruit flavors of black plum, stone fruit, and currant on the palate that are slightly muted and layer in nicely with the leather, cigar box, and licorice. The wine is supple and full and the medium-length finish leaves an impression of freshness. The addition of a tiny bit of new french oak at the end of the aging process is worthy of mention. Expectations are that this will easily age for 15+ years.
