Ron Galella

The late paparazzo Ron Galella is widely regarded as the world's most famous photographer of candid celebrity images. Over a career that spanned nearly six decades, he took millions of spontaneous shots of every conceivable type of celebrity - film, television, music, supermodels, fashion, athletes, politicians, business moguls, artists, authors, and innovators. Galella's work ushered out the old Hollywood studio system and introduced Hollywood mavericks of the 60s and 70s, including Marlon Brando, Jack Nicholson and Robert De Niro. During his unprecedented career, he amassed the world's largest archive from a single source dedicated to popular culture. He photographed them all-from Elvis Presley and Louis Armstrong, to Muhammad Ali and Joe Lewis, to Jackie Onassis and Princess Diana, to Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift. In 2016, TIME magazine proclaimed his popular image of Jackie Onassis, "Windblown Jackie" as "one of the most influential photos of all time." Born in 1931, Galella died in 2022.
