Photojournalist: Jodi Cobb

Title: "Geisha"

Jodi Cobb: "Geisha," Kyoto, Japan, 1985

The fabled world of the geisha is one few Westerners know anything about. Photographer Jodi Cobb was able to enter this secretive, sensual and artful realm and learn the truth about the lives of the ever-dwindling community of traditional geishas. In her book, "Geisha, the Life, the Voices, the Art," Cobb summarizes their history and hallowed place in Japan's hierarchical society. She describes their training, and relates life stories of individuals, tales full of heartbreak and stoicism, pride and nobility. Geishas are both artists and living works of art, professional performers who transform themselves into embodiments of timeless beauty.

Jodi Cobb

Jodi Cobb's trailblazing career spans four decades as a National Geographic staff field photographer - the only woman to have held that position. She has traveled throughout 100 countries to document cultures in some of the world's most impenetrable environments. She was one of the first photographers to travel across China when it reopened to the West, the first to photograph the hidden lives of Saudi Arabian women and Japanese geisha, and, in a ground-breaking story, exposed people trapped in the tragic world of human trafficking. She was awarded an honorary doctorate, and two of journalism's most prestigious honors - the Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism and the NPPA Sprague Award.
