This image is from Gerd Ludwig's "Sleeping Car" series, in which he seeks to answer the question: Where do the seven million cars of Los Angeles go to rest at night? He writes, "The series shows cars that have a presence. They command their space.... Many sleep in covers, wearing them like nightgowns, though some sleep in the nude." Ludwig is a German-born photographer who has worked for major international publications for more than four decades. He currently lives in Los Angeles.
Gerd Ludwig
During the late 1970s, German-born Gerd Ludwig gained recognition for his work in GEO magazine and his insightful photo essays on European artists. After relocating to the United States, he became a regular contributor to National Geographic magazine for three decades. His long-term in-depth coverage of the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster is considered a milestone in modern photojournalism. Among his numerous accolades are the Dr. Erich Salomon Award from the German Society for Photography and the Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism. Ludwig is the author of several photography books, including "Broken Empire," "The Long Shadow of Chernobyl," "Sleeping Cars," and "Beuys Land." He currently resides in Los Angeles.
