This powerful image of a diver who appears to be soaring through the air in a classic Superman pose is one of a series of amazing diving photos taken by David Burnett at the Fort Lauderdale Diving Center and at Olympic events. Burnett is a photojournalist with more than seven decades of work covering the news, the people, and visual tempo of our age.
David Burnett
David Burnett grew up in Salt Lake City, where he began taking pictures for the high school yearbook. Upon graduation from college, he began a long relationship with TIME and LIFE magazines. In 1976 he co-founded Contact Press Images, the international photojournalism agency, which distributes his photographs around the world. His nearly six decades of work includes coverage of the war in Vietnam, the Iranian Revolution, every American president since JFK and 14 Olympic Games. He is a SONY "Artisan of Imagery" and in addition to his state-of-the-art digital cameras, uses a 90-year-old Speed Graphic Press film camera. This year, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the White House News Photographers Association.
