Be one of the first to receive a copy of the KMA's latest exhibition catalogue, Ali Banisadr: The Alchemist, signed by the artist.

This sumptuous hardcover publication is an exploration of a powerful voice in contemporary art. At first glance, Banisadr's works resemble gestural abstractions, charged with energy and interwoven colors, but on closer inspection they reveal themselves as vast theatrical landscapes, often populated with a cast of characters enacting mysterious narratives. His complex, turbulent visual worlds are marked by syncopated rhythms that corral a multitude of references from across art history--including German Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Renaissance and medieval art, alchemical imagery, Mesopotamian antiquities, and Persian miniatures--while at the same time engaging with pressing issues in contemporary society.

This monograph accompanies Banisadr's first museum survey, spanning twenty years of the artist's career and features new scholarship by Michelle Yun Mapplethorpe, KMA Director and Chief Curator; Elizabeth Monti, KMA Associate Curator; Dr. William H. Sherman, Director, The Warburg Institute, University of London; and Dr. Grazina Subelyte, Associate Curator, Peggy Guggenheim Collection. Also included is an insightful transcribed conversation with the artist and renowned art historian Robert Storr, and a fully illustrated and annotated plate section.
