MEET THE MUSIC

Our Meet the Music program aims to bring accessible and exciting exposure to classical and contemporary music to communities across Los Angeles.

Meet the Music is a free fundamental music education program that Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) conducts in a number of participating Los Angeles public schools with a focus on composition as an educational technique and tool.

Over the course of 10-12 weeks, LAUSD students in grades 3-5 engage in weekly workshops with trained Teaching Artists to learn about elemental music concepts, including vocabulary, rhythm, melody, harmony, moods and phrases, and conducting.

Each year, these workshops are built around a theme selected by Music Director Jaime Martín. To demonstrate these concepts, LACO musicians and LACO Fellows make occasional appearances, bringing the world class artistry found on our stages directly into the classroom.

The program culminates in an interactive concert that features musical selections along with pieces that the Teaching Artists write in collaboration with the students in their classrooms.

Current schools participating in our MTM Program are Angeles Mesa Elementary, Virginia Road Elementary, Birdielee V. Bright Elementary, Loren Miller Elementary, Lanai Road, and Hoover Street Elementary.

Leading this comprehensive classroom experience is our current cohort of Teaching Artists: composer Ella Kaale, composer Tomas Peire, composer/performer Giovanni Piacentini, and composer Sebastian Sack.
