Lowering Afternoon by Henry Rankin Poore oil on canvas, 13.75 x 10.5 inches, 20.5 x 17.5 inches framed. Born in Newark, New Jersey, Poore studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and the National Academy of Design, as well as at the Academie Julian in Paris with Bouguereau. During his many years as an artist, Poore traveled and painted in New Mexico and Colorado, as well as returning to Europe to paint in France and England. He was part of both the art groups in Philadelphia as well as in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Poore exhibited his works extensively at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the National Academy of Design, the Brooklyn Art Institute, the Boston Art Club, the Paris Salon and at the Corcoran Gallery biennials.
Along with being an accomplished genre and landscape painter, Poore was also an illustrator for Harper's Weekly, and a professor at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art.
