1st Plasma Lamp Demo for Light Lab

This Plasma Lamp is a sample of what Pittsburgh Glass Center has to offer when you combine ambition, education, and community with support. The blown glass was made by Zach Layhew, Percy Echols II, and Sean Bradley during the plasma and hot glass summer intensive in 2023. For Percy, this was the first class he's led at the Pittsburgh Glass Center without guidance of an experienced mentor, where he demonstrated to students how the internal shapes affect how the plasma moves within. Later that summer Percy designed the display base for his class that he taught at Pilchuck Glass School. There he was providing students with a constraint for designing their blown glass for plasma, utilizing Pilchuck's own Fab Lab for quickly creating solutions and resources for students. This piece was not yet complete until it filled with various noble gases: Neon, Krypton, and Xenon. During on-site Light Lab presentation, Percy engaged students in STEAM by putting the science, art, and technology on display showing the tools, and equipment used in plasma and neon, the connection between light and electricity in hope of showing what can be done when you use what you learn in school to learn and do what most interests you or drives your curiosity.
