Hall of Famer Lee Smith Autographed Baseball
Lee Smith played for 18 years in Major League Baseball, was the all-time career saves leader from 1993-2006 with 478, and named to the Hall of Fame in 2019.
He was drafted with the 28th pick overall in the 1975 MLB draft by the Chicago Cubs as a 17-year old, and made his debut with the team in 1980. He spent the 1980 through 1987 seasons with the club and remains the Cubs' all-time leader in saves with 180.
Smith also played in the Majors with the Red Sox, Cardinals, Yankees, Orioles, Angels, Reds, and Expos, retiring in 1997.
-----------
The signed ball comes from the collection of former first-round MLB draft pick, professional player and coach, and University of Tennessee quarterback, Alan Cockrell. He has also donated baseballs signed by Bill Buckner and Carlos Beltran (see separate listings of items 203 and 204 to bid).
Cockrell got the Lee Smith autographed ball listed here while he was the Hitting Coordinator with the Arizona Diamondbacks during Spring Training in Tempe, AZ in March 2012. The ball is inscribed with Lee Smith's name and "478 saves."
