"I witnessed the demolition of a beautiful landscape next door to my home; plants, trees, insects, wildlife gone in a few short hours. After the last enormous tree fell and the bulldozers left, I walked the now silent property. Is this what Simon and Garfunkel meant by The Sounds of Silence? That day the silence was deafening.
Frantically circling above their fallen nest were two Blue Jays. Moved to tears I gathered pieces of bark, some branches and proceeded to my art studio. Without thought or plan, channeling pure emotion and instinct, I sculpted a blindfolded female form embracing a small bird. ( the bird represents all non human animals; the blindfold suggesting humans purposeful intent to not see...to ignore their destructive and cruel behaviors.)
The Last Bird series emerged after this one experience, but I have always observed and been angered by the hypocrisy of human professions of love for nature, animals, and the environment only to participate in their destruction."
