In 2023 Michter's was named the MOST ADMIRED WHISKEY IN THE WORLD. Now you can admire four bottles of your own, signed by their Master Distiller, Dan McKee. This esteemed mash up includes US*1 Bourbon, a bourbon that presents a very straightforward, light, and pleasant nose. New oak, corn, grain, and raisins were all present, but very subtle. The palate can best be summed up as sweet with good mouthfeel. Sweet corn, honey, and vanilla are immediately noticeable when you take a sip. The palate comes off as that of a young whiskey that hasn't spent a lot of time in the barrel. The finish is light and lingering. Notes of oak, white pepper, honey, peaches and raisins lingered for a while in my mouth with the predominant flavor being the white pepper that brings a subtle heat and spice to the finish.
Next up is Michter's US*1 Rye, a single barrel, straight whiskey, bottled at 84.8 proof (42.4% abv). In the glass, the whiskey has a nice, even coloring of bright coppery orange, very much what one might expect from a proof in the 80s and a not -too-aged liquid. The nose is packed with fruity, spicy rye notes, but strongly belted with something of the earthy caramel candy, like a proper craft caramel candy sans the saltiness.
Then there is US*1 American with cherry, cinnamon, cedar, deep brown sugar notes; subtle burnt caramel and soft vanilla; some leather appears, more so after a sip or two; moderately sweet; mild alcohol. The taste of cherry, brown sugar, cedar and char with a bit of caramel and vanilla towards the end. The flavors continue with black pepper spice, dry oak and barrel char growing. Cedar reappears, to be joined by some leather which appears later on; The finish is fairly long, soft and lingering, although the relatively mild spice hangs on, too. There's a nice warming sensation, but no real burn.
Lastly try US*1 Sour Mash with stone fruit, spice and floral notes with light oak. When you taste, your palate is greeted with the caramel, corn and fruit notes early. As you hold the whiskey in your mouth there is a numbing astringency similar to that of mouthwash (in effect but certainly not taste) as the spice note grows. As you finish, you feel the sweetness of the initial taste slowly morphing into a hotter rye finish but that rye note doesn't overwhelm the fruit notes and floral notes of the start.
