Gabor Peterdi was a Hungarian-American painter and printmaker who immigrated to the United States in 1939. After arriving in the US, he enlisted in the US Army and fought in Europe during World War II. He established and directed the Graphic Workshop at the Brooklyn Museum Art School, and was faculty at Hunter College and Yale University.
Peterdi explored various graphic media, but he is best known for his engravings. His technical sensitivity and skill, demonstrated in his art and in his teaching, helped generate a revival of printmaking in this country. Peterdi's art is forceful and expressive, evoking the essence of his subjects and often conveying the power of nature.
Peterdi's work is held by the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among other institutions.
