1Karen Hackenberg, Arctic Home, 2024, Archival pigment print on canvas, 24" x 24" x 2"
Karen Hackenberg's (B.F.A., RISD) paintings are currently featured in her solo exhibition, "Sea Change: The Art of Karen Hackenberg" at Tacoma Art Museum.. She exhibits internationally and is represented by Patricia Rovzar, Seattle, and Rebecca Hossack, London, UK.
Karen uses humor and beauty to light a candle in the darkness of our eco-disaster weary minds. In her wry post-pop Unnatural Disasters paintings, she interprets the effects of climate change such as recurrent large-scale fires, destructive superstorms, droughts, floods, melting glaciers, habitat loss, and species extinctions. In Arctic Home she ironically sets a plastic McDonald's/Coca Cola cup, emblazoned with a cute polar bear family, amidst the sea of cracking ice and oil rigs in their warming Arctic home.
