Teresa Gillespie, Swans, Reduction woodcut, 8" x 10"
Teresa has been making woodcut reduction prints, the oldest form of printmaking, for over ten years. She starts with a block of Shina wood, a traditional Japanese softwood made from the lime tree. She inks the block with water-based ink, starting with the lightest color first (white or pale yellow) and then progressing to deeper hues, up to a dark blue, purple, or black. Most of her pieces have six or more layers of ink. She then uses a traditional Japanese hand press to imprint the image on paper, one sheet at a time. Each print has slight variations.
