Louise Kikuchi, Autumn Dusk, 2016, Sume on paper, framed with glass, 17.5" x 17.5" x 1", i.e. gallery, Edison
Seattle-based Louise Kikuchi was born and raised in Hawaii. In the 1960s she studied art in Hawaii and at the Sorbonne in Paris. She then studied sumi with Hashimoto Torin, in Tokyo in the early 1980's. Sumi is a carbon-based ink used as a medium in calligraphy and paintings of China, Japan and Korea. Unlike Western watercolors, sumi ink bonds with the paper and once painted becomes permanent. Louise was an Associate French professor at Western Washington University from 1979-1996.
