This beautiful set is by Navajo artist, Doug Capitan.
He notes "I often recognize the women in my life, being that we are a matrilineal culture. Everything from themes of fairs, to the passion of my career trajectory. However, this time I'm giving tribute to the gentlemen in my life who contributed to shaping my life and the lives of our communities. My DNA is rooted in the history of the Navajo Nation with my great x3 grandpa being Jesus Arviso, interpreter during the Treaty of 1868, and my great x2 grandpa being Paddy Martinez, discoverer of Uranium on the Navajo Nation. Both influenced and shaped the path forward for the Navajo people by being gatekeepers in their ability to transcend language and identity. To do so they were shaped and molded by the societies, time, and place they were born into.
They like the green turquoise bead were molded and shaped through their existence of being multifaceted individuals. Arviso was of Mexican heritage, placed into captivity by the Apache, and married into the Navajo; spoke Spanish, Navajo, Apache, and English. Martinez was half Navajo and half Irish, spoke English and Navajo and was a significant participant in the history of the United States. For both men, the materials and substance of their being remained the same as their people. However, their shape in character and place in history differed from those around them. This piece recognizes the contributions of countless number of gatekeepers who sacrificed part of themselves, so that we may be here today."
This set is made of green Kingman Turquoise round nuggets, sterling silver barrel/wire/chain/hook, and sterling silver over copper caps, and pewter spacers.
