Smith, Kay - Red Tails Escorting the B17s - Watercolor - 2013 This Limited Edition Fine Art Print of Kay Smith's "Red Tails Escorting the B17s" is one of 500 copies printed on Hahnemuehle 308 Cotton Photo Rag Archival Paper using Canon lucia Ex archival inks. The artwork was commissioned by the Pritzker Military Museum & Library in Chicago, Illinois. This print is #93 of 500. The 99th Pursuit Squadron of the US Army Air Corps was activated on March 19, 1941. After training at Tuskegee Army Airfield, the first Arfican-American military pilots left the United States for action in WWII. With their fighter planes' tails painted red to aid in identification, the African-American airmen flew more than 1,500 mission escorting bombers over enemy territory. Kay Smith, named Artist Laureat of Illinois in 1994, painted this watercolor in honor of the contributions of all the first African-American military pilots.
