1Kitchen Picture: Portrait of a Black & White Thinker
Acrylic and pencil on found wooden cutting board
8" x 12"
Neutrality of the "canvas support" is lost when painting on found, often used, cutting boards as they are ripe with domestic content and draw attention to themselves with their sculptural presences; their palpable thicknesses & implied densities and weights, their unique laminated patterns & wood grains, their cracks, knife cuts, and grease stains (even odors) that tell more stories still - they demand to be considered as the content, if not share the content with the paint applied to their surfaces. The practice is also not original, although the subject matter of paint-on-cutting boards has historically been proudly provincial; even applying modernist goop onto the boards seems to be subsumed into the realm of kitsch cornered by the wooden objects that won't be denied their original identities. Hence the series title "Kitchen Pictures" is not only a reference to that identity and homely belonging, but also points to the inescapable "kitsch" of their new identities in an art museum.
