Welcome
Jo Bulls Black Herefords is a working ranch that develops cattle that know how to work. The ranch is owned by Scott and Laurel Johansen and their son Brock Johansen and his wife Andrea. We take pride in raising good cattle and great kids. The work on the ranch is all done by our family.
Our cattle summer on a Forest Range at 10,000 feet in elevation. The permit requires them to travel and work. It also requires high altitude cattle. The calves are weaned in the fall and the cows graze on a High Desert BLM permit during the winter. The water is scarce and the cows have to be able to walk across rough terrain. Much of the ranch work is performed on horseback.
Beginning in 2009 we started converting our red Hereford herd to Black Hereford. We used the top Black Hereford bulls in the nation to make this transition. Now we run 200 Black Hereford mother cows. Our main qualification for any herd bull we use is that they have to come from females that produce great offspring and that are trouble free.
Auction
We have traditionally offered our cattle by private treaty. This year we are taking a hybrid approach. The first 11 lots will be sold by smartauctions.
Private Treaty
We are offering the remaining lots by private treaty. One of our favorite parts of ranching is the many visits by buyers to view our cattle. We appreciate all of the friends we have made over the years. We extend an invitation to you to come and see the cattle and to view our efficient cow herd. However, if you cannot make it, we will help you pick out a bull over the phone. We believe it is difficult to find a herd that is as docile, hardworking, and efficient as our herd.
Please contact me to reserve your picks. The Herefords are Back in Black!

TRANSPORTATION/DELIVERY
We can help find transportation for your purchased cattle. Jo Bulls will make trips into Idaho, Western Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah, and will attempt to find central drop-off locations at no cost in those areas. Jo Bulls also takes a trailer load back towards Kansas City each year, and will haul cattle back to meet buyers for $300.00/animal. We have relationships with other transporters and can help you arrange other shipping needs. However, any other transportation is the responsibility of the buyer.
SALE TERMS
All sales are cash unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been agreed to by the buyer and the seller. The cattle purchased at auction will have to be settled through Smart Auction and the cattle becomes the buyer's risk at that point. The Private Treaty cattle becomes the buyer's risk when the animal leaves the seller's property. Buyers are responsible to come and pick up the cattle within 4 weeks of agreeing to purchase. The seller guarantees that all cattle are eligible for interstate shipments as required by federal and state regulations, unless otherwise stated.
HEALTH
All sale bulls are up-to-date on vaccinations (BVD, Black Leg, Brucellosis, and worming). The bulls will have a complete health and breeding exam in February along with a PAP test. The seller's veterinarian will have inspected the animal and a health permit will be provided for all cattle leaving Utah. Once the bulls have been transferred to the new owner, it is the responsibility of the buyer to maintain the bull in good working condition and health. Yearling bulls need to be further developed and fed properly, and Jo Bulls does not warranty the bulls after the first breeding season. The livestock are sold as is, without any additional representation.
EPDs
The provided EPDs were pulled from the ABHA database, but may change upon further EPD runs.
