ARTIST BIO

Jess Landis was born and raised in York, and recently returned from the Washington, DC area during the pandemic. She is a scientist by training, but in her spare time enjoys creating art in all forms. She has been working mostly with acrylic paint on canvas, but recently started experimenting with watercolor. Landis is still finding her style, tends to lean towards more impressionistic. She takes classes, learns new techniques, and is creative as time allows. Her subjects are varied, but mostly come from photos or that really speak to her. She finds photos don't do justice to the original experience, and painting that moment is a chance to express and capture the feeling you had and the way you saw it.

Landis loves everything to do with octopii - she knows this isn't the commonly accepted plural form, but it's her favorite! :) She thought it was high time to paint one! This curious little guy is an amalgam of a few deep sea dwellers - mostly the thermal vent octopus (Vulcanoctopus hydrothermalis) and some extra purple from the super cute Pacific warty octopus (graneledone pacifica).

Landis has enjoyed getting to know the Creative York community and hopes to keep meeting more kindred spirits and making more art!
