Three-week Session at Camp Maxwelton for Boys or Camp Lachlan for Girls in 2024

Nestled at the foot of Jump Mountain in the southern Shenandoah Valley, Camp Maxwelton and Camp Lachlan offer a special three-week camp experience. Each of their eight cabins is home to several counselors and a multi-aged group of campers. They believe that family-style, big brother/little brother or big sister/little sister living is best. Friendships between different-aged children allows older campers the chance to learn how to lead by example, to teach and to mentor. It allows younger campers to learn from their older cabin mates, and to have older, more experienced campers to rely on for support, advice, help with inspection, etc.

All Maxwelton and Lachlan campers participate in daily activities. Taking place between Devotions and lunch, activities are taught by their talented counselors and attended in groups of five or six campers at a time. While their living and dining arrangements are of mixed ages, they find that teaching is most efficient and effective when working with a consistently-grouped level of ability, attention span, and general size, so age groups work best.

Activities include swimming, horseback riding, art (Lachlan), dance (Lachlan), riflery, archery, tennis, climbing, crafts, football (Maxwelton), lacrosse, field hockey (Lachlan), soccer, wrestling, basketball, softball, golf (Maxwelton), volleyball (Lachlan) and skeet (older Maxwelton campers only).

Camp traditions include Bobo's, Trip Day and Field Day in which campers are organized into two teams to compete in a series of morning activity competitions, ball games, track and field competition, swimming relays, and a final "marathon," an all-camp relay race that winds around the farm from the entrance to the top of the back hill.

Camp Maxwelton 2024 dates are June 16 to July 6. Camp Lachlan 2024 dates are July 14 to Aug. 3.
