Beautiful artwork collaboration created by local artist Kellen Scott and Arkansas Children's Hospital Northwest patient MacKenzie, age 17.
ABOUT KENZIE
MacKenzie "Kenzie" was diagnosed with osteosarcoma at the age of 14. Two years later, she was diagnosed with heart failure. Kenzie has spent nearly 300 days and nights at Arkansas Children's, where she received chemotherapy treatments as well as multiple surgeries. Her family appreciates the care close to home offered at Arkansas Children's Northwest. Kenzie continues to be treated at Arkansas Children's today and is a hardworking student, who is currently looking at colleges and plans to become a nurse.
ABOUT THE ART
Kenzie's map features locations that have been meaningful to her during her journey as a patient - hospitals, schools, landmarks, and homes. When she reflects on her experience, the phrase
"Hurry up and wait" stands out. This phrase grounds the piece while simultaneously conveying a feeling of disorganization in the "not knowing."
Artist Kellen Scott, who deeply connected with Kenzie over this refrain from his time in the Marine Corps, collaborated with her on the piece by incorporating pages from one of her favorite books, Code of Honor by Alan Gratz, as the base of the artwork. Together they layered warm colors, connecting the overall aesthetic to "the heart." Glue and gold leaf create the map and the stippling.
This piece reminds us that there is beauty in chaos and that it's okay to acknowledge and sit in the uncertain.
