Rescue Story:
Malachi and his brother Mato spent a couple years on the street. As puppies, they had a "home", but it wasn't long before the owner allowed them to start roaming. At first, they stayed right by their house, but as they got older they could be seen hanging out with other dogs quite some distance from home. They did eventually settle across the street from a lady that would pretty consistently leave food for them. Neither would come close, but they watched as I would stop and leave food, then go to eat as I pulled away.
Mato disappeared for a few weeks and when he returned, his rear leg was badly injured. It looked like he had been hit by a car and his back leg was splayed open. Waiting for space to rescue him was no longer an option, he needed help now. He was hunkered down in the back bedroom of the house with the green steps. I set a trap so he basically had no option but to go in if he wanted to leave the room. It didn't take long; I went back in to check the trap and he had gone in.
Mato got his freedom ride that day and I kept telling his brother to stay there, I would be back for him.
I wasn't seeing him consistently, but I could tell that he was starting to have trouble breathing. I suspected that he had severe heartworms and it was really starting to affect his heart and lungs. Even the neighbor that had been keeping an eye on these boys stopped me and said she didn't think he would live through the winter with the way he was coughing and struggling to breathe.
It was Malachi's turn for a freedom ride. I was a bit surprised how easily he went into the trap but I sure was happy that he did. My suspicions were correct about the heartworms. He has been through treatment, but the damage was done. Malachi spends the time he has with his human and four legged friends at the shelter.
