Title: Follow that Nursing Mom

Artist: Donna Lochmann

Medium: Digital Photograph with repurposed wood window

Dimensions: 39" x 24"

Rescue Story:

While out with a ride along, we spotted a skinny dog off in the distance rummaging through some trash. As we got closer, not only was she skinny, but she was full of milk. I tried to give her food but she walked off and we had to drive around a bit before we got eyes on her again. This time I was able to get her attention, fed her and waited to see if she would lead me to her puppies now that she had a full belly.

She knew that neighborhood and once again we lost sight of her. Thankfully, I knew the neighborhood too and a few doors down from the spot we fed her, there was an abandoned house that we had previously found puppies. So, on a hunch I parked and went in just hoping to find mom and puppies.

The house was completely blackened from fire and I needed to watch my step. I barely got in the door when mom came around the corner. She turned and went back and laid down on a mattress that was nothing but springs. I searched everywhere in that room, no puppies. No whimpering, nothing. I went to another room and I could hear puppy cries under a blanket at my feet. A puppy had gotten itself wrapped in the blanket. Was there just a single puppy? Nope! I moved the mattress leaning up against the wall and there were seven more in the closet. It's always such a great feeling to get a mom and puppies off the street.
