1Phillip Maisel, Serengeti Green (1809), 2015
Archival pigment print
24 x 17 in.
Phillip Maisel makes highly stylized abstract compositions with a variety of materials from his studio, and then photographs them. Each piece is created from building materials, studio supplies, and other objects that can create a sense of space and form. The order and position are then changed, and re-photographed, to create a series of possibilities made from the same colors, materials, and patterns. The collage effect appears three dimensional forms, yet very flat.
Maisel (born 1981 in Chicago) is based in San Francisco. His work has been exhibited at Gregory Lind Gallery, Right Window, and Southern Exposure in San Francisco; Shulamit Nazarian in Los Angeles; Document and Heaven Gallery in Chicago; The William Benton Museum in Connecticut; The University of New Mexico in Taos; and DeCordova Museum in Massachusetts. His work has been reviewed in Modern Painters, Art Practical, Fabrik Magazine, Square Cylinder, and New City Art, among others. In 2015, his work was featured in curator Charlotte Cotton's latest book Photography Is Magic, a critical publication of contemporary photographic practices. He received his MFA from the California College of the Arts, San Francisco, CA.
