The multimedia artist Emily Lanctot's print is from an ongoing series of photographs that explore the minutia of everyday. Her nearly daily log shows a sensitivity to nostalgic signs, rural homes, and the landscape of Michigan's Upper Penninsula--in this case an icy scene. She explains, "Looking out the window reminds me of the protective boundary between nature and me." Her observational photography shows a curiosity of barriers--such as this pane of glass--or of what may be contained by a residential space.
Emily Lanctot often employs images and language to explore identity, memory, the archive, and ideas surrounding public architecture and private/domestic space. Her work moves across media and is situated in the everyday. She received a B.F.A. in Drawing and Painting from Northern Michigan University and an M.F.A in Interdisciplinary Studio Arts from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Lanctot is a Contingent Assistant Professor at Northern Michigan University School of Art and Design. She is also the curator at Northern Michigan University DeVos Art Museum. Her work has been shown in museums and galleries across the U.S.
