Cat Clausen, Chaiwa-Tewa, n.d.
oil on canvas
24 x 18 in. (f. 26 x 20 x 2 1/2 in.)

Cat Clausen is a portrait painter known for her "Ribbons of Color" series from which she developed her creative style of brush strokes and illustrative lines. Growing up in Arizona, Clausen began an interest in art from her early childhood, creating her own jewelry, pottery, and clothing. Clausen earned her bachelor's degree in visual communication from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. After graduating, she worked in marketing, public relations, and art direction until 1993 where she left her career. From then, she began to teach herself to paint in oils, a paint medium she never studied in college. As many of her works dealt with her own story, she began to research and draw famous political and educational icons. One of her most famous portraits is that of the 16th United States President, Abraham Lincoln, which was featured on the covers of magazines, banners, and signs all over the city of Chicago.
