This painting was done by Tommy Yackley, an incarcerated artist. Tommy has served 28 consecutive years of his sentence of Life Without the Possibility of Parole. His sentence was commuted by Governor Brown in late August and he now has an opportunity for release. Tommy is a member of the Progressive Art Program which is a flagship program, the first of its kind in the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Artists at the California State Prison-Los Angeles County (LAC), produce a number of both contemporary and traditional creative works that are donated for philanthropic causes. Many of the artists have won recognition for their work in area art competitions. The program was co-created by Root and Rebounds Operations Assistant, Jon Grobman, while he was incarcerated at LAC.
