Ron is a former player who is the head coach of the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League (NFL). Rivera played college football at the University of California at Berkeley and was recognized as an All-American linebacker. He was selected in the second round of the 1984 NFL draft by the Chicago Bears and was a backup on the 1985 team which won Super Bowl XX. Rivera continues to instill in his players the values and lessons of his father, a veteran who served 32 years in the U.S. Army. Rivera's father, Eugenio Rivera, from Bayamon, Puerto Rico, was drafted into the Army in 1952 and completed his basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He trained as an Army engineer and served in Germany and France before completing two tours of duty in Vietnam, during which he was stationed in the Mekong Delta. As a coach, Rivera was the defensive coordinator for the Bears in 2006 when they won NFC Championship and competed in Super Bowl XLI. In 2011, he was named head coach of the Carolina Panthers. Rivera was recognized as the NFL Coach of the Year by the Associated Press in both 2013 and in 2015. Since taking over the Panthers, he has led the team to three straight divisional titles, and an appearance in Super Bowl 50.
