Ray Sobel was mostly self-taught. He started painting after retiring from teaching and administrative work on Long Island and moving to Upstate New York. Once there he took classes with Nancy Calhoun, Easton Pribble and in Mexico with Don Stewart. But a statement by Graham Southerland that "One should begin a painting, knowing that the end ought to be a surprise" was very influential to his feeling about painting and supported the freedom to express his love of color and willingness to experiment with shapes, composition and styles.
After moving to North Carolina his association with both the Kinston Community Council of the Arts and Greenville Brushstrokes was very important to him-the other artists, the critiques, the camaraderie all helped him enjoy and develop his art. Acrylics and pastels were his medium of choice.
He exhibited at several places in central New York, including Cooperstown Museum of Art, Gannet Gallery of Utica and others. In North Carolina his work has been shown at Kinston Community Council of the Arts, Wayne County shows in Goldsboro, Circle 10 in Oriental, Emerge, A' Tavola , Uptown Gallery and Greenville Museum of Art. He won awards for his work in pastels, acrylics and watercolor.
