Milwaukee: City of Neighborhoods by John Gurda:

Published by Historic Milwaukee, Inc., this 466-page book is the most comprehensive account of grassroots Milwaukee ever published. Based on a popular series of posters published by the City of Milwaukee in the 1980s, the book features both historical chronicles and contemporary portraits of 37 neighborhoods that emerged before World War II, an ensemble that defines the historic heart of the city. The book also features 11 new neighborhood posters by artist Jan Kotowicz, who created the original series.

Milwaukee: A City Built on Water by John Gurda

Paddle through the watery history of the Midwest's Cream City. In Milwaukee: A City Built on Water, celebrated historian John Gurda expands on his popular Milwaukee Public Television documentary, relating the mucky history of the waters that gave Milwaukee life-and occasionally threatened the city through erosion, invasive species, and water-borne diseases. Telling tales of brewers, brickmakers, ecologists, and engineers, Gurda explores the city's complicated connection with its most precious resource and greatest challenge. You'll meet the generations of people, from a Potawatomi chief to fur traders and fishermen, who settled on the small spit of land known as Jones Island; learn how Milwaukee's unique water composition creates its distinct cream-colored bricks; visit Wisconsin's first waterparks; and see how city leaders transformed the Milwaukee River-once described as a "vast sewer" with an "odorous tide"-into today's lively and lovely Riverwalk.

Schooner Days: The Story of Wisconsin's Flagship and the Rebirth of Discovery World by Frank Steeves and Christopher Winters, featuring an essay by John Gurda

People from all walks of life labored for over decade to breathe life into the schooner Denis Sullivan, a "Symbol of the Possible." Compiled over a period of nearly twenty-five years by award-winning Great Lakes photojournalist Chris Winters-himself an early Lake Schooner volunteer-this account features an engaging memoir penned by Frank Steeves, who led the project, first as its Chairman, and later as co-Chairman with philanthropist Michael Cudahy, from its inception in 1989 through 2008, when all aspects of the new Discovery World Museum were fully operational.

The book also contains an essay on Milwaukee's roots as an engine of freshwater commerce and culture by eminent historian John Gurda. Epic in scope, featuring hundreds of contemporary and archival photographs, "Schooner Days" weaves the complex and colorful tale of the life and times of Wisconsin's Flagship, and the creation of her new homeport, Discovery World Museum.
