This auction is for an original piece by local artist Philip Lavelle!
The way we experience reality has changed.
Our lives are split between the "real" and the "virtual" more now than any other point thus far. In this landscape our vision is also split between the "real" and the "screen". In this body of work I am exploring our contemporary and ever changing way that we view the world through screens and the virtual.
I create layers of information separated by many coats of clear gloss medium. By compressing many layers together I reference the simultaneousness of the virtual and look at creating works that are nonlinear abstractions of our everyday interactions with both the "virtual" and the "real". I look not to place a judgment on what is happening to our lives but rather explore the visual-scape of this world through means of abstraction calling upon the history of painting and seeing.
I create nonsensical structures that play with depth and perspective while referencing the devices that we use to view the virtual and calling onto the world of the physical. The paintings are composed of stenciled spray painted lines, collaged inkjet prints of both found and family photos, and layers of clear medium. I choose to make paintings to explore this world because painting is one of the few artistic mediums that is nonlinear in that you are presented with all the information at once, simultaneously.
The aesthetic and process of the work references commercial products and digital design. The process to make the paintings is in essence creating photoshop or illustrator files by hand. I want to use commercial aesthetics to make visual poems that explore the infinitely shifting landscape of our lives. To depict "a place without space".
