"Whistle" is a mixed media acrylic painting, measuring 36x48".
Comments by Bill Colt: The title of this painting is a direct reference to the title of James Jones' third, and partially unfinished book of his great World War II trilogy; the first two books are "From Here to Eternity", and "The Thin Red Line". In the book "Whistle", the main characters come home, wounded, on a hospital ship like this one.
This painting, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Red Cross in Union County, is a tribute to the Red Cross doctors, nurses, and workers who risked their lives in the service of the sick and wounded during World War II, and are still doing so today. The large red crosses on the side of the ship were there to denote a ship of mercy to the enemy. Sometimes they prevented being fired on; sometimes not.
Thank you, Red Cross, for all you do in the service of your fellow man.
