An original creation of horticultural art all created locally in the Milwaukee area by Michael Yanny. All the plants were developed in this area for our climate. Red Stern was Selected by Michael Yanny at Johnson's Nursery, Inc. in 1995 from a crop of open pollinated Cornus racemosa seedlings. Irish Setter? looks mostly like its mother, Cornus racemosa, but is likely a hybrid with Silky Dogwood, Cornus amomum. It was first noticed as something different from the species because its previous season's growth retained a red color all winter. Young plants cut to the ground in spring will have reddish-orange stems the following winter, not unlike Cornus sericea (Red-twig Dogwood). Two year old wood and older loses the color and the bark turns gray. The plant has excellent resistance to Septoria leaf spot, which will often defoliate Cornus racemosa.

Irish Setter? should be very useful as a shrub border plant for screening purposes. For those interested in landscaping with native plants, Irish Setter? is a great plant for yards with limited space. It won't spread rapidly. It originated from a native local Southeast Wisconsin seed source.
