The Wapiti Lodge was constructed in 1984 by Sigurd Rockne, one of the three founders of Breckenridge, which also included Tyrgve Berge and Bill Rounds. Sigurd and Tyrgve were on the Norwegian National Ski Team and worked as ski instructors in Aspen. In 1960, they met Bill Rounds who invited them to Breckenridge to look at business opportunities. There they convinced Bill to develop Peak 8 and cut the first two runs, Rounders and Spruce, by hand.
In 1961, Breckenridge Ski Resort opened for business. Sigurd, an entrepreneur, opened one of the first fine dining restaurants in Breckenridge, The Mine. Also a stone mason, he became a master home builder constructing several fine houses around Breckenridge including the Wapiti Lodge.
