This property is on some very special soils of the Graves region of Bordeaux entitling it to its own appellation, Pessac-Léognan, which encompasses the top wines of the appellation and grants the classification of Grand Cru Classé to all members. Smith Haut Lafitte makes both a red and white grand vin. Cabernet Sauvignon usually accounts for 60 to 65 percent of the red wine, Merlot contributes around 30 percent, and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot round out a typical blend. The wine is aged in barrels for about 18 months with 60 to 65 percent new wood. 2005 was an excellent vintage in Pessac-Léognan, as well as all over the entire Bordeaux region. Only organic agriculture is used on this property.
