The appellation of Margaux is one of the best known thanks to Hemingway's love of the most famous local wine, Chateau Margaux. This appellation rests at the southern end of the Medoc, closest to the city of Bordeaux (still about 15 miles away). The 40 hectare vineyard of Chateau Kirwan is planted to 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Petit Verdot. Margaux wines are often noted for their more feminine side due to the softness the Cab Sauvignon receives from the soils here, as compared to the stronger and more masculine feel of the wines from Pauillac. 2005 was an excellent vintage in Margaux, as well as all over the entire Bordeaux region.
