This Lou Gehrig commemorative plate is numbered by the Franklin Mint. This American League first baseman, known as "The Iron Horse", played his entire professional career as a New York Yankee. He held many records during his career including most career grand slams (until surpassed by Alex Rodriquez) and most consecutive games played (until swept by Cal Ripken Jr. in '95). His consecutive game streak ended in 1939 when he removed himself from the lineup after his field performance was affected by ALS, an incurable neuromuscular disorder now commonly referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease".
