- 2007 Chateau Pichon-Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville, Pauillac, France
- 1995 Domaine Jacques Prieur Chambertin Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits, France
Chateau, "Bright ruby-red. Very pure aromas of cassis, minerals, licorice and bitter chocolate, all lifted by a note of violet. Sweet, broad and round for the vintage, with lovely energy to the flavors of cassis, chocolate, minerals, menthol and flowers. Juicy and sophisticated wine with terrific balance and no dip in the middle. Finishes with subtle complexity and length and sweet, fine-grained tannins. A major success for the year. Range: 90-92"
Chambertin, the Grand Cru vineyard of Charmes is located below Chambertin, next to Griotte-Chambertin.
History & tradition: were there "charmes" (beech trees) growing here at one time? Or were people just referring to the characteristics of the wine? A 19th Century official document does mention the "untilled land of charmes"...
