ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The internship is with the Rush Epilepsy Center and will include the opportunity to observe and view firsthand the physician/patient relationship in a clinical setting. Rush Epilepsy Center specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with epilepsy. The student will have the opportunity to attend lectures and meet with the entire staff to discuss the overview of the work conducted at the Center with patients. The student will learn about the medical condition, how a diagnosis is made, what treatment options are available and the Center's work.

ABOUT THE CENTER AND THE DIRECTOR
Rush Epilepsy Center is one of the oldest established subspecialty practices in Chicagoland for patients with epilepsy. There are trained and certified epileptologists in the practice who work on a team with nurse practitioners, clinical nurses, research PhDs, certified medical assistants, a social worker and administrative staff who all play roles in the evaluation and treatment approaches to our patients with epilepsy. The Center offers innovative treatment plans including VNS placement and Neuropace. It provides video-EEG monitoring studies and perform surgery on patients for whom this treatment will be beneficial.

Dr. Michael Smith is the Director of the Rush Epilepsy Center. He is a professor in the Department of Neurological Sciences and a senior attending physician. Under his leadership, the Center has grown since its beginnings in 1972 under the leadership of Dr. Frank Morrell. Dr. Smith is an advocate for patients with epilepsy, highly respected in the neuroscience community and has done numerous talks throughout his career. He has also authored and co-authored books and articles in medical journals.
