Diwani is a calligraphic variety of Arabic script, a cursive style developed during the reign of the early Ottoman Turks (16th-early 17th century). It was labeled the Diwani script because it was used in the Ottoman diwan and was one of the secrets of the sultan's palace. The rules of this script were not known to everyone, but confined to its masters and a few bright students. It was used in the writing of all royal decrees, endowments, and resolutions. This Picture of the Poetry/Proverb "Lions Smile" comes from a famous Arab Poet named Al-Mutanabbi. "Just because you see the lion's teeth don't assume that the lion is smiling." This quote is written exactly six times throughout this stunning image of a lion. The original version of this piece was exhibited and sold during the summer of 2012 in Art Lounge, Beiteddine, Lebanon as part of the exhibition 'MAKTOOB'.
