"New York Dimes" 1763 & 1780
Before the United States could mint their own coinage, coins from other countries had commonplace usage. These two silver coins (Dutch Silver 2 Stuiver) were used and circulated in New York State, one from before the Revolutionary War and the other from shortly afterward. Because of the scarcity of currency, both remained in circulation for years following the war. The first official US dimes were minted in 1796.
