Spectrum Community Service Award: Samuel Tucker, M.D.

Access Institute is delighted to honor Dr. Samuel Tucker for his contributions to Access Institute and the mental health of the community. Over the past decade, Dr. Tucker has volunteered his time and expertise to Access Institute, providing compassionate psychiatric care to individuals who have nowhere else to turn. Beyond the care he provides to patients, he's a seasoned teacher to our trainees and a wise mentor to our staff. His service is a true inspiration to everyone who understands how a compassionate community of volunteers can make life-changing mental health care accessible to those in need.

"Working in a clinic like Access Institute is incredibly rewarding," Dr. Tucker says. "Psychiatry can be isolating, but being part of this community has kept me engaged in meaningful community work. It's a fantastic team, and working with trainees is a vital aspect of that. This place has cultivated a strong sense of community."

In his role, Dr. Tucker specializes in helping patients facing profound challenges, including depression, anxiety, and psychological trauma. He provides crucial support by ensuring patients receive the right medications and use them appropriately, guiding them toward stability and empowerment. His dedication is evident in the countless lives he's helped transform, enabling individuals to better cope with stressors and move forward in their lives.

Dr. Tucker commends Access Institute's excellence, noting, "Access Institute is truly remarkable; it thrives and attracts top-tier trainees. The commitment to community mental health among the staff here is unparalleled. Graduates of our training programs maintain a lasting connection, returning to contribute as teachers and supervisors. Spectrum Emcee: Mark Lukach

Mark Lukach is a teacher and freelance writer. He is the author of the international bestselling memoir My Lovely Wife in The Psych Ward. His work has been published in the New York Times, The Atlantic, Pacific Standard, Wired, and other publications. He is currently the Ninth Grade Dean at The Athenian School, where he also teaches history. He lives with his wife, Giulia, and their son in the San Francisco Bay area.

My Lovely Wife In The Psych Ward is the product of 5 years of Mark writing about how mental illness redefined his young marriage to Giulia, and ultimately affirmed the power of love.
