Estelle Halper

Estelle Halper (1918-1980) was an acclaimed potter born in White Plains, New York. She initially took ceramic classes at Greenwich House Pottery in Manhattan in the early 1940's.. She was learning to mix elements for glazes, taking courses with Peter Volkous, James Crumrine, and Ilsa Rothmer. She is best known for her volcanic turquoise and blue glazes, these were developed while experimenting in her studio in the early 1950's.

Her work was featured in group shows at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Contemporary Crafts Museum, The Everson Museum, with solo exhibitions at America House (1952), Rabun Studio (1951-53) Hudson River Museum, Silvermine Guild of Art and Philadelphia Art Alliance, as well as in many private galleries.

His scholarly approach to the field has established him as an authority, particularly in French Art Deco, the American Studio Craft Movement, Wharton Esherick and George Nakashima. He is the author of several publications on art and communication - and on the work of George Nakashima and Wharton Esherick. He produced and directed several award-winning documentary films from 1972 - 1986. Aibel received his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D in Aesthetic Communication from the University of Pennsylvania. He was on the faculty at Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania from 1974 to 1992.
